What are wave washers?

Wave washers are a type of spring washer designed with a wavy or corrugated shape, providing a flexible, spring-like action. When compressed, wave washers flatten to create axial force. Instead of lying flat like standard washers, their wave-like profile allows them to absorb shock, maintain tension, and compensate for variations in assemblies.

Custom wave washers

Some projects call for more than standard sizes. Our engineers work closely with you to design custom stamped washers that meet your exact performance needs. We fine-tune dimensions, choose the best alloys, and apply the right treatments.

The result is washers designed to handle your specific challenges. With global supply capabilities, your components arrive quickly and reliably.

Types of wave washers

Wave washers are available in several forms, each serving a specific purpose:

  • A thin metal wave spring formed in an uneven circular shape with a small opening on a white background.

    Standard wave washers

The most common design, providing a compact spring effect in a washer form. These manage axial load and reduce rattling in tight spaces.

  • A thin metal wave spring formed in an uneven circular shape with a small opening on a white background.

    Stamped wave washers

Produced from sheet metal, these are typically closed and offer a uniform fit. Stamped washers are strong, consistent, and ideal for high-precision assemblies.

  • A thin, flat metal wave washer with a slightly irregular, wave-like shape on a transparent background.

    Gallock-wedge lock washers

Gallock-wedge lock washers secure threaded systems using tension instead of friction. They consist of two identical flat washers with cams on one side and radial knurling on the other, pre-glued to ensure correct assembly orientation.

How do wave washers work?

Wave washers work by using their wavy, spring-like profile to create and maintain a flexible, compressive force between two surfaces. As the waves are compressed flat, they generate spring pressure that holds components tight. This feature compensates for dimensional changes, thermal expansion, and vibration, keeping assemblies secure even in dynamic environments.

Unlike flat washers, which only spread load, wave washers actually store and release energy as they are compressed, similar to a small spring.
