Lockable gas springs
Lockable gas springs are essential wherever controlled positioning, adjustable support, and secure locking are critical. From medical equipment and industrial machinery to ergonomic furniture and vehicle interiors, a locking gas spring – sometimes referred to as a lockable gas strut – delivers smooth movement combined with the ability to hold loads safely in place.
At Lesjöfors, we design and manufacture rigid locking on extension, rigid locking on compression, and elastic locking gas springs for the most demanding applications. With advanced locking mechanisms, customizable stroke lengths, and adjustable force options, our gas struts with lock functions provide exceptional performance across industries.

What are lockable gas springs?
Lockable gas springs, also known as locking gas springs or locking gas struts, are designed to hold the piston rod securely at any point along its stroke without the need for external locks. This is achieved through a specialized lockable spring design that separates the gas and oil chambers, enabling smooth adjustment and reliable load holding.
Typical applications include adjustable tables, chair backrests, gym equipment, control panels, desks, beds, and medical or patient care equipment where safe, precise positioning is essential.

Stock locking gas springs
At Lesjöfors, we supply one of the industry’s most comprehensive selections of stock locking gas springs, offered in a wide range of sizes, forces, and locking options.
As one of the leading lockable gas spring manufacturers, we provide fast and reliable access to precision-engineered components worldwide through our global distribution network.

Custom locking gas springs
Every application has its own requirements, and our lockable gas springs are designed to match them. Working closely with you, we tailor solutions by adjusting dimensions, stroke lengths, release mechanisms, and forces to deliver optimum performance.
We can also design adjustable locking gas springs for applications that demand variable load handling. With decades of experience and a global network, we ensure reliability from design to delivery.
Types of lockable gas springs
Lockable gas springs are available in different designs to suit functional requirements across wide-ranging industries. Our engineers can supply and manufacture the following types:

Rigid locking on extension gas springs
These springs lock the piston rod completely in extension, with zero movement. Ideal for secure positioning in medical equipment, adjustable tables, and industrial systems.

Rigid locking on compression gas springs
These springs lock the piston rod firmly in its compressed position, preventing any movement under load. Perfect for safety mechanisms, lifting systems, and other applications requiring stable positioning.

Elastic locking gas spring
Elastic designs lock the piston rod while allowing slight cushioned movement under load. Common in ergonomic furniture, gym machines, and patient care equipment for added comfort.

Advanced locking gas spring manufacturing
Lesjöfors lockable gas springs are manufactured for precision, safety, and durability. Using advanced gas filling and sealing technology, precision-machined pistons, and specialized locking mechanisms, every unit ensures smooth adjustment and reliable load holding. Comprehensive in-house testing, including endurance and fatigue verification, guarantees consistent performance in the most demanding applications.
- Advanced gas filling and sealing for precise force control
- Rigid and elastic locking mechanisms engineered for accuracy
- Certified quality standards – ISO 9001, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, ISO 13485:2016

How do lockable gas springs work?
Locking gas springs work by combining the force of compressed nitrogen with an internal locking mechanism. When the piston rod is moved, a valve-controlled design separates gas and oil chambers.
By activating the release mechanism, the piston can be positioned smoothly along the stroke and locked securely at any point. Depending on the type, the lock may hold rigidly or allow slight cushioned movement under load, ensuring safe adjustment and reliable load support.

Lockable gas spring materials
Lesjöfors manufactures lockable gas springs with high-quality materials and precision finishes for durability in demanding environments. Cylinders are produced from pressure-rated carbon steel for strength and cost efficiency, while piston rods are polished and treated with chrome plating or black nitriding for superior wear resistance and corrosion protection. Optional coatings extend service life against environmental exposure, making them equally effective in lock gas struts and applications requiring a gas strut lock function.
For applications exposed to moisture, cleaning agents, or strict hygiene standards, stainless steel lockable gas springs ensure reliable corrosion resistance. High-performance polymer seals and precision rod guides maintain internal pressure, guaranteeing smooth adjustment, secure positioning, and consistent performance over time.
