There are three main types: compression springs, torsion springs, and extension (tension) springs. Other types include disc, wave, clock, volute, power, constant force, and garter springs.

Coil springs are often manufactured from a range of materials, with chrome silicon being the most common in heavy-duty applications due to its strength. Stainless steels and advanced alloys are also widely used.

While excellent materials and appropriate design greatly increase lifespan, coil springs are subject to age and fatigue over time, depending on their use and environment.

Hot coiling is typically used for larger, heavy-duty springs as it allows thicker wire to be formed. Cold coiling suits pre-hardened wire of smaller diameters used in many applications.
