Project overview: enhancing Tumbl Trak’s sprung flooring

When watching a gymnast flip, tumble, twist, and land with precision, it’s easy to overlook the engineered system working beneath the surface. Under the mat sits a carefully configured web of sprung floor springs, designed to absorb impact, control rebound, and support the needs of the gymnast.

Working with Tumbl Trak, an international gymnastics equipment specialist, Lesjöfors developed a high-quality spring solution for sprung gym flooring – engineered to optimize athletic performance while meeting the sport’s strict safety requirements.

Design criteria for Tumbl Trak’s sprung floor springs

What was the brief?

As gymnasts continue to push the limits of performance, the equipment beneath them must keep pace. Tumbl Trak asked us to develop a high-quality spring to enhance athlete performance on their sprung gym flooring.

What makes the project special?

Gymnastics flooring has undergone various improvements over the years, with each development focused on increasing performance while maintaining the highest safety standards. Knowing that our springs form the foundation for future Olympians meant the solution had to deliver consistent and reliable results.

What our clients say

Pushing the boundaries of what's possible

"As gymnasts push the boundaries of what is humanly possible, it is essential that the equipment they use develops and evolves with them. The gymnastics floor area has seen numerous improvements and adaptations over the years, all with the aim of increasing performance while keeping the gymnast as safe as possible. Spring material choice, design and layout are essential components in the making of a floor area, and using the best quality materials is of the utmost importance."

Manufacturing sprung floor springs

Due to the size and material requirements of the compression spring design, the sprung floor springs were manufactured using advanced cold coiling, followed by heat treatment to enhance strength and fatigue performance. To meet installation requirements within the floor mats, each spring end was also precision-ground to a defined specification, ensuring consistent placement.

Material selection was critical to the success of the project. The design required a carbon steel grade capable of delivering the necessary strength and durability under repetitive loading in high-pressure environments. This carbon spring steel also supports hardening treatments, providing a robust and cost-efficient solution aligned with customer expectations.
