The Öresund Bridge is a rail and road bridge across the Öresund Strait between Sweden and Denmark. In certain wind and temperature conditions, the cables on the suspension bridge would vibrate, which was felt by road users
Engineers were concerned about the long-term effect of these vibrations on the wider bridge infrastructure, including structural strength and durability. To address the issue, the main contractor turned to Lesjöfors. The task was clear – design bridge dampers using a custom compression spring solution to reduce vibration and support long-term infrastructure performance.

What was the brief?
We were tasked with creating a bridge damper solution to control and reduce large vibrations affecting road users on the combined rail and road bridge spanning the Öresund Strait.
What makes the project special?
Multiple teams across Lesjöfors analyzed the issue, and through iterative testing, validation, and refinement, we developed a solution to address the most exposed suspension cables.
The project required precision engineering for a safety-critical application, where long-term performance and reliability were essential. It was an honor to work on such an architectural icon.

What did Lesjöfors do?
The bridge dampers we developed consisted of a sealed tube housing a high-performance compression spring, along with carefully engineered internal components.
The compression spring supported a movable piston-shaped weight, combined with an adjustable control ring. This ring was used to regulate airflow on either side of the piston, allowing fine-tuned vibration control for each cable.
The dampers were installed in pairs at the center of the cables. Two units were equipped with laser gauges, enabling continuous monitoring and accurate registration of piston movement during operation.
What challenges did Lesjöfors overcome?
Managing vibration on Europe’s longest combined road and rail bridge, which is under constantly changing wind and temperature conditions, presented a significant engineering challenge.
By applying custom bridge spring design and damper expertise, the Lesjöfors team delivered a solution that stabilizes cable movement and supports long-term bridge infrastructure performance. It also means that road users can enjoy a smoother ride across one of the most beautiful bridges in Europe.
